Serve scaled down image assets optimized for smaller screens over cellular connections.

    Check Page Load Speeds on Mobile Networks  

    Test site performance on real mobile devices over 3G/4G connections using tools like WebPageTest and Google PageSpeed Insights. Optimizing speed is vital for conversion rates – 53% of mobile users abandon sites taking over 3 seconds to load per Google research. Enable compression, browser caching, lazy load non-critical assets, and minimize HTTP requests through code optimization.

    When specifying dimensions like widths, heights, font sizes or spacing, leverage relative units like percentages (%) or (em, rem) instead of absolute values like pixels. Relative units enable elements to resize responsively across device sizes to prevent awkward overflow issues on narrow mobile screens. 

    Pixels lock content to а fixed size that fails to reflow, necessitating horizontal scrolling on small devices – which 61% users dislike per Baymard research. Using (em) for font-sizing and (%) for dimensions allows scaling elements proportionally in а fluid manner. Relative units combined with max-width/min-width media queries offer the layout flexibility mandatory for mobile experiences.  

    Ensure Adequate Space Around Touch Targets

    On mobile devices, users interact via touch instead of mouse cursors. If touch targets like buttons and links are spaced too closely, the finger will likely hit adjacent links causing errors and frustration. According to Apple guidelines, the minimum tappable area must be around 44px x 44px. However larger is better for error tolerance – recommended minimum spacing between targets is 8px vertically and horizontally. 

    Ensure CTAs have ample padding on all sides so users can accurately tap their intended target. Leverage tools like Typecast to test touch target spacing across mobile prototypes to catch issues early.

    Verify Easy Tapping Without Zooming

    Similar to spacing, also test touch target sizes are large enough to tap without needing zoom. Ensure text links, buttons and other tappable elements maintain hit areas about 44px x 44px or larger as the bare minimum. Enabling double tap to zoom defeats the purpose of an optimized mobile experience. Evaluate touch targets against established mobile usability guidelines to provide easy access without zooming gestures.

    Eliminate Horizontal Scrolling

    Horizontal scrolling severely impairs mobile usability by hiding navigation links at screen edges, forcing two-handed use for sideways scrolling which feels unnatural. Stretching small viewports beyond screen width quickly frustrates users struggling to find screen edges. Avoid horizontal scrolling by fixing maximum page width to viewport width using CSS max-width property. 

    Fluid relative units combined with media queries allow the page to shrink elegantly to prevent sideways scrolling across device sizes. Eliminating horizontal overflow delivers mobile compatible vertical scrolling users expect on phones and tablets.

    Avoid Pop Ups and Interstitials

    Displaying popups and interstitial splash screens may work on desktop sites with larger monitors. But on mobile devices, these overlay windows obstruct too much content real estate delivering irksome experiences. Unless these overlays deliver truly valuable, non-interruptive content users actually want, avoid such intrusive patterns on mobile altogether. 

    Even benign overlays trigger too much unwanted tapping to close and resume navigation. Deliver content via mobile-friendly onboarding tooltips instead of obstructive popups if necessary.

    On narrow small screens and slower connections, minimize the number of tabs, links and menu options users must tap through to access content. According to NNGroup research, mobile menus should limit tap depth to 3 levels maximum. Simplified navigation provides faster access compared to cluttered sitemaps. Improve discoverability for hidden links using expand/collapse accordions to declutter space.
