AI Search Optimization Explained: How Businesses Get Named in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews

Alfa TeamBy Alfa TeamSeptember 15, 2026No Comments12 Mins Read

If you have asked ChatGPT for a good accountant, typed a product question into Gemini, or noticed the AI Overview that now sits above the classic results on Google, you have already seen the shift that is reshaping how businesses get found. Instead of a list of ten blue links, a growing share of people are getting a single written answer that names a handful of companies, products or services and explains why. For the businesses that get named, that is a new source of leads. For the ones that do not, it can feel as though they have quietly disappeared from a channel that used to work for them.

This guide explains, in plain terms, how AI assistants decide which businesses to mention, what “AI search optimization” (also called Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO) actually involves, what you can do yourself, and where an agency fits. It deliberately avoids hype. Nobody can guarantee a place in an AI answer, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. What you can do is make it much more likely that AI systems understand your business accurately and have good reasons to mention it.

How an AI assistant builds an answer

It helps to start with what is happening under the hood, because the optimization work only makes sense once you see where the answers come from. Modern AI assistants combine two things. The first is a language model that has been trained on a very large body of text, which gives it general knowledge and a sense of which names are associated with which topics. The second, and for business discovery the more important one, is live retrieval: when you ask a question, the system runs searches in the background, pulls in a set of web pages, reads them, and composes a response from what it found.

That composed response usually leans on three kinds of raw material:

    • Web content. Pages that clearly answer the question being asked, in language that is easy to extract. A page that states “we install heat pumps in Bristol and the surrounding area, with typical installation taking two days” is far easier for a model to use than a page full of slogans.
    • Citations and third-party mentions. Directories, review platforms, industry publications, news stories, comparison articles and forum threads that mention a business by name. When several independent sources agree that a company does a particular thing well, the model has more confidence in naming it.
    • Entity data. Structured information about who a business is: its name, address, categories, services, opening hours, founders, and the relationships between those facts. This comes from business listings, knowledge graphs, structured data markup on the site itself, and consistency across everywhere the business appears online.

When these three sources line up, the assistant can say with reasonable confidence, “This company exists, it does this, other people vouch for it, and here is what makes it relevant to your question.” When they contradict each other or are missing, the assistant will either skip the business or, worse, describe it inaccurately.

Why there is no page two

The single biggest change from traditional search is the absence of a second page. In classic search, being ranked seventh or twelfth still put you in front of some people. In an AI answer, the model typically names three to five options and stops. There is no scrolling to find you. Either you are one of the names the model reaches for, or you are not in the conversation at all.

This has a practical consequence for how you think about visibility. It is no longer enough to be somewhere in the index. The goal is to be a business that AI systems can describe clearly and confidently, for the specific questions your customers actually ask. That is a narrower target than broad keyword rankings, and it rewards specificity over volume.

What AI search optimization actually involves

Because the term is new, it is often either dismissed as rebranded SEO or inflated into something mysterious. The reality sits in between. The work of AI search optimization is a set of fairly concrete tasks, most of which you can understand even if you would rather have someone else do them.

    • Question research. Instead of starting from keywords, the work begins with the actual questions people put to assistants: “Which CRM is best for a five-person sales team?” or “Who does emergency boiler repair near me on a Sunday?” These are longer, more conversational and more intent-rich than typical search queries, and they shape everything that follows.
    • Content restructuring. Existing pages are rewritten or reorganized so that they answer those questions directly, with clear headings, short factual statements, and specifics such as prices, locations, timeframes and who a service is and is not for. Vague marketing copy is replaced with content a model can quote.
    • Entity and citation building. The business is described consistently on its own site and then earns mentions elsewhere: industry directories, relevant publications, partner pages, local press and comparison articles. The aim is for independent sources to corroborate what the business says about itself.
    • Review and listing consistency. Name, address, phone number, categories and service descriptions are checked and aligned across Google Business Profile, Bing Places, review platforms and any niche directories. Mismatches are a common reason AI systems hesitate or get facts wrong.
    • Schema and structured data. Markup is added to pages so that machines can read the business type, services, FAQs, products, authors and reviews without having to infer them from prose.
    • Monitoring what AI says. Because models change and retrieval results shift, the work includes regularly asking the major assistants the relevant questions and recording whether the business is named, how it is described, and which competitors appear instead.

None of these steps is magic, and none of them forces a model to do anything. Together they make a business legible to AI systems and give those systems reasons, backed by independent sources, to mention it.

How this differs from SEO, and where it overlaps

You might reasonably ask whether this is just SEO with a new name. The honest answer is that there is a large overlap and a meaningful difference.

The overlap is substantial. AI assistants retrieve web pages using search technology, so a site that is technically sound, crawlable, fast and well-linked has a head start. Good content, clear structure and a reputable backlink profile matter in both worlds. If your SEO foundations are weak, AI search optimization on top of them is building on sand. AEO complements SEO; it does not replace it.

The differences are in emphasis and in what “winning” looks like. SEO is oriented around ranking positions for keywords, and a page can rank well while being written in a way that a model finds hard to summarize. AEO is oriented around whether a model, having read several sources, chooses to name you and describes you correctly. That pushes the work toward conversational questions, toward explicit factual statements, toward off-site corroboration, and toward monitoring the answers themselves rather than a rankings report. It also means paying attention to platforms that classic SEO tools often ignore, such as forums and community discussions that models draw on when forming opinions about which businesses are reputable.

    What you can do yourself

You do not need an agency to make progress, especially if you are a small business with a limited budget. Several of the highest-value steps are within reach for anyone willing to spend a few hours on them.

    • Ask the assistants about your own business. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, and search Google in a way that triggers an AI Overview. Ask the questions a customer would ask. Write down whether you are named, what is said about you, and who else is mentioned. This is your baseline, and it is often eye-opening.
    • Fix your basic facts everywhere. Make sure your business name, address, phone number, hours and core services are identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory you can find. Inconsistency is cheap to fix and surprisingly harmful when left alone.
    • Write one clear “who we are and what we do” page. State plainly what you offer, where, for whom, at roughly what price, and what makes your approach distinctive. Avoid adjectives that cannot be verified. Add a short FAQ that answers the questions you are asked most often.
    • Add basic structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Product and FAQ markup are all well documented and can be implemented with common website plugins.
    • Encourage genuine reviews and mentions. Ask satisfied customers to review you on the platforms relevant to your industry, and look for opportunities to be listed or written about by local press, trade associations and partner businesses.

Doing these things will not guarantee anything, but they remove the most common reasons a model either ignores a business or describes it wrongly.

Where an agency fits, and how to judge one

Agencies come into the picture when the work exceeds the time or expertise you have, when you operate in a competitive category where a few mentions will not be enough, or when you need ongoing monitoring across many questions and several AI platforms. Some, such as Omni Eclipse, focus specifically on getting businesses named and recommended in AI answers, work on a done-for-you basis, and offer a free AI visibility audit as a starting point so a business can see its current position before committing to anything.

That audit-first model is worth understanding because it tells you something about how the field works. A credible AEO engagement starts with measurement: which questions matter, which assistants your customers use, whether you currently appear, and how you are described. Only then does it make sense to plan content, citations and listings. Be cautious of any provider that skips this step and goes straight to a package.

When you evaluate an agency, a few tests are useful:

    • Do they publish case studies? Look for described work across different industries, with an explanation of what was changed and what was observed, rather than just a headline number.
    • Are they transparent about method? You should be able to get a clear list of the tasks they will carry out, similar to the one earlier in this article, and an explanation of why each one matters.
    • Do they monitor and report on AI answers themselves? Some agencies provide a client dashboard that shows what the major assistants are saying about a business on an ongoing basis. Whatever the format, you want evidence, not assurances.
    • Do they avoid guarantees? No one controls what a model outputs. An agency that promises you will be “the recommended choice” in ChatGPT is making a claim it cannot back. Honest providers talk about probability, consistency and monitoring.
    • Do they respect your existing SEO? Good AEO work builds on a healthy site rather than tearing up what already brings you traffic.

    The risks of doing nothing

It is tempting to treat AI answers as a novelty and wait. There are two reasons that is riskier than it looks.

The first is that AI systems will describe your business whether or not you participate. If the information available to them is thin, outdated or inconsistent, the model may fill in the gaps with guesses. Businesses have found assistants quoting old addresses, services they stopped offering years ago, or, in the least helpful cases, details that belong to a different company with a similar name. These hallucinated or stale descriptions are hard to notice unless someone is checking, and they can cost you customers without your ever knowing why.

The second risk is more direct: if you are not named, someone else is. When a prospective customer asks for a recommendation and the answer lists three competitors, that customer rarely goes looking for a fourth option. Every question you are absent from is a shortlist you were never on.

    Timelines and realistic expectations

Because the underlying systems refresh on their own schedules, changes to your site and citations do not show up in AI answers overnight. Structured data and listing corrections are picked up relatively quickly by search indexes, but their influence on which businesses a model names tends to build over weeks and months as new mentions accumulate and retrieval results settle. Answers also vary between platforms and even between sessions on the same platform, so a single test is not a reliable measure of progress. Expect gradual movement, expect variation, and judge results over a sustained period of monitoring rather than a snapshot.

It is also reasonable to expect uneven results. You may find yourself consistently named for one type of question and absent from another, or strong on one assistant and weaker on another. That is normal and is exactly the information that should feed the next round of work.

Where AI search fits alongside everything else

Finally, keep this channel in proportion. Referrals, word of mouth, paid advertising, social media and classic organic search all continue to bring customers, and for many businesses they will remain the majority of new business for some time. AI answers are best understood as an additional discovery layer sitting on top of that mix, one that draws on the same reputation and information you are already building elsewhere.

The encouraging part is that most of the work that makes you visible to AI systems, such as clear information, consistent listings, genuine reviews and third-party mentions, is also work that makes you more trustworthy to a human reading your website or hearing about you from a friend. Getting named in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews is less about gaming a new algorithm and more about making sure the facts about your business are unambiguous, well supported and easy to find. Do that, keep checking what the assistants say, and you give yourself the best available chance of being on the shortlist when a customer asks.
