Most people wait until they get home from the hospital to think about how their house will work during recovery. By then it’s harder to fix. Stairs are still stairs, the bathroom is still across the hall, and now there’s a surgical site to protect while figuring it out.
The better time to look at your home is in the weeks before surgery, while you can still carry boxes, move furniture, and test what works. Some of this is simple enough to do yourself over a weekend. Some of it is worth paying for, either because it needs a skill you don’t have or because doing it wrong creates a fall risk.
What You Can Handle Yourself
A lot of recovery setup is just rearranging what you already own. Moving a bed downstairs, clearing a path to the bathroom, and putting daily items within arm’s reach are tasks anyone can do without tools or special skills.
Before surgery, walk through your house the way you’ll move through it afterward: slower, with less balance, maybe with one arm out of use. Clear loose rugs, tape down cords, and move anything you’d normally bend down for up to counter height. Set up a recovery station near wherever you’ll spend most of your time, with water, medications, phone charger, and entertainment all in one spot.
Stocking the freezer with easy meals is another do-it-yourself task. Cooking a week’s worth of soups, casseroles, or portioned meals ahead of time means nobody has to figure out dinner while someone else is managing pain and limited movement.
When It’s Worth Paying Someone
Installing grab bars, raised toilet seats with real support, or a ramp over a step is different from rearranging furniture. These need to be anchored into studs or rated for weight, and a bar that pulls out of drywall is worse than no bar at all. A handyman or occupational therapist can do this correctly in an afternoon, and it’s worth the cost given what a fall during recovery can cost in both money and setback time.
Medical equipment rental is another place where paying makes sense. Walkers, shower chairs, and hospital beds can often be rented month to month through a medical supply company, which costs less than buying equipment you’ll only need for a few weeks. Many supply companies will also deliver and set up the equipment, which is worth the small fee if you’re the one who would otherwise be moving a hospital bed up a staircase.
General surgeons like Ian Reight, who practices in Vernon, Maine, routinely talk with patients before surgery about what their home needs to look like during the weeks after. That conversation usually happens well before the operating room, which is exactly when these decisions are easiest to make.
Medication and Wound Care: A Mixed Case
Sorting medications into a weekly pill organizer is something most people can do themselves, as long as they’re not the one who will be groggy from anesthesia for the first day or two. For that first stretch, it helps to have someone else double-check doses and timing.
Wound care is similar. Simple dressing changes are usually something a patient or family member can learn to do with a short demonstration. But if a wound needs regular professional attention, a visiting nurse or home health aide is the right call rather than trying to manage it alone.
A Simple Way to Decide
Ask two questions about each task: does it need to be anchored, weight-rated, or medically trained to do safely, and would getting it wrong create a real risk of injury or infection? If the answer to either is yes, hire it out. If the answer is no to both, it’s probably fine to handle yourself, and doing so before surgery is one less thing to arrange while you’re recovering.
Most households end up with a mix: furniture moved and freezer stocked by family, grab bars and a shower chair handled by a professional. Figuring out which is which, before surgery rather than after, is what makes the first week home easier instead of chaotic.
